Road toll taxes - they're coming yet for a' that!

Despite the Government at Westminster showing signs of cold feet about road tolls... sorry congestion charging is what we are supposed to call them... the Scottish Government has nailed its colours to the mast. Our Transport Minister Tavish Scott wants to have us pay for every mile we drive.

Even if England and Wales were to do a U-turn (a legal one we hope), it appears that the current Lab-Lib coalition in Scotland are determined to press ahead.

There is of course one small problem for them. The Scottish Parliamentary elections! They take place on May 3. If there are enough people out there who (like me) don't believe that that the new toll tax will be in place of fuel tax (who can imagine our Government resisting the temptation to milk even more money out of our pockets?), then road tolls could become a BIG ISSUE at the election.

As many people have pointed out, there are civil liberties concerns. Once you have paid through the nose to install the "spy-in-the-cab" box in your car, your every move will be tracked. How secure will that information be? What's the danger of your local neighbourhood burglar finding out that you have been tracked heading down the A90 on holiday, leaving your house in Aberdeen unattended?

The Conservatives are certainly keen to make this a political hot potato for the Lib-Labs. They have taken a lesson out of the No 10 book and have started their own on-line petition. You can find it at www.scotlandsaysnototolls.com
