Transport to the fore in North East, Scotland and UK
The announcement on the Aberdeen Western Peripheral
route follows on from its incorporation within the National
Transport Strategy so now, hopefully, we can expect it to head
towards the target opening date of 2011. It may be late, but better late than
never as they say.The NESTRANS Regional
Transport Strategy for North East Scotland sets out NESTRANS
aspirations for the next stage of implementing the Modern Transport System. It
includes reference to the long-awaited Aberdeen Crossrail which aims to have
trains running every 30 minutes from Stonehaven through to Inverurie, with a new
station at Kintore estimated to open in
2009.The report does seem to present a
reasonably balanced approach that recognises the importance of road transport,
while providing enhanced public transport. It remains to be seen how it will be
implemented. A consultation is available
on the site with a deadline for comments of February 7,
