Reopening the knackery

Driving up the Tyrebagger behind a lorry bearing the Oran Group name brought it to my attention that the group is hoping to restart operations at the knackery, or rendering plant if you want to be posh, just outside Kintore.

Those of us who have lived in Kintore for some years can remember the awful smells that emanated from the plant when it was under the ownership of Dundas Brothers. If the wind was in the wrong direction, then simple things like washing cars or walking dogs would be hurriedly curtailed as we scurried into our houses and sealed doors and windows tight.

From the reports at the time there were good reasons why the smell escaped. There were tales of roofs with holes, open air storage and doors that opened to the outside world. The company had also had a number of run-ins with SEPA, including some prosecutiions.

The Oran Group has been at pains to reassure people that it will be a better neighbour and, recently, members of the community council had been to the plant and been impressed by the measures taken to ensure that offensive odours did not escape from the premises (see community council minutes for February 19 - click COMMUNITY COUNCIL at the top of the main pages on www.kintore.org.uk).

Oran also plan to put in place a waste to energy plant which would supply electricity to the grid.

It is reassuring that SEPA is waiting for a "satisfactory application" before giving the plant a green light and it is also encouraging that the new owners are confident that their measures can stand up to the scrutiny of community councillors.

We do not want a repeat of the problems caused in the past!
