Ne'er cast a cloot till May is oot
In such a variable climate as we have in Scotland,
the weather is always a good topic of conversation. This spring has proven no
exception.
A month ago, or more, we spent a glorious weekend
outdoors in warm summer sunshine, enjoying al fresco breakfasts and
dinners.
In May, however, the central
heating is back on and the electric blankets are pressed into action. It seems
the old North-east adage: "Ne'er cast a cloot till May is oot"* is indeed
apt.
The daytime temperatures have been
hovering in single figures and dropped as low as 4C - that's the average high in
this area for January! Overnight there have been quite heavy frosts, as our
rhododendrons will testify.
One day there
was a spectacular show of red, pink and orange blooms. The next morning all that
was left was shrivelled, wilted
mess.
Having started exceptionally dry,
the month of May has not only been cold but it has also been wet with a
succession of April showers, which got the month
wrong.
Oh, well I suppose there's still
the chance things might improve for June, July and
August!
(*The web
being world wide, a translation might be something like 'never put away your
warm clothes until the end of May'.)
