John Paul Jones 1747-1792

John Paul Jones, the Hero of the American War of Independence, was born as John Paul - the son of one of the gardeners at Arbigland in Kirkbean.

He became an apprentice seaman at the age of 12 and worked on slave ships, trading ships and even smuggling for around 15 years. John Paul Jones's cottage is now a museum in Kirkbean and the gravestones of his family are in Kirkbean churchyard.

In 1773 John Paul inherited property in Virginia and, in 1775. At the start of the American War of Independence, he covered his real identity by assuming the surname Jones and joined the American Navy.
