Right here on your computer! Kirkbean is on the Solway Coast, near Dumfries, in the south of Scotland. It is a small rural parish with fertile farmland. Probably Kirkbean's main claim to fame is that it was the birthplace of John Paul Jones, the hero of the American War of Independence. It was here in this parish that the McKunes lived. Spelling in these days was of little consequence and you can find the same person appearing as McKewn in the parish birth register, McKewan on his marriage certificate and McKune on his tombstone. The change to McEwen in our branch of the family came when Tom McEwen (1817-1890) moved to Glasgow and found that the spelling McEwen was known, whereas McKune was not. Tom McEwen claimed to have documentary evidence that the name had started off as McEwen, in any case. Our own family tree goes back, with certainty, to John McKune (1705-1779) a farmer at Kimkerrick in the parish. He married Jane Blacklock (1708-1874). Whether the line runs back beyond that to the Covenanting McEwens of Glencairn, must remain as speculation.
