KINTORE TO GET INDIAN TAKEAWAY

Kintore is likely to get its fourth food takeaway business following councillors' approval of plans by Aberdeen businessman Mr Toha Chowdhury for the conversion of the Muchowski's newsagent shop at 2 Northern Road into an Indian Takeaway.

Aberdeenshire Council officials had recommended that councillors refuse the application on the grounds that it would be detrimental to the amenity of the adjoining houses. There had been three representations against the plans, including one from Kintore & District Community Council, citing concerns about safety, proximity to homes, noise, rubbish, odours, parking, opening hours and lack of rear access for the premises.

The Indian will join the existing Fish and Chip shop, the Pizza business and the Chinese takeaway at Midmill in supplying takeaway food.

KATE-A-KINTORE TO CLOSE

Kintore's famed second hand store Kate-a-Kintore is to close. The owner blames lack of interest in second hand goods, saying that people now demand - and thanks to ready credit - are able to purchase everything as new. Second hand goods are simply no longer in demand.

The Kate-a-Kintore store was in the news in recent years when people in the adjoining housing estate called for the store to be closed on amenity grounds. There was a surge of support for the store, pointing out it had been in existence long before the new houses.

MALCOLM BRUCE HOLDS SEAT FOR LIB DEMS

Malcolm Bruce, the Liberal Democrat MP, has held onto his Westminster seat with an increased majority in the May 5, 2005 General Election.

Boundary changes meant that the Gordon consituency now includes part of the former Aberdeen North constituency and excludes Turriff which was previously part of Gordon. The biggest surprise was that the Conservatives were pushed into third place by Labour's Iain Brotchie.

VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR ARCHAEOLOGY IN MARCH

The research excavations in Kintore last year identified the earliest known activity in Kintore - a Mesolithic hunting camp dating to around 6000-5000 BC.

AOC is about to organize a further set of excavations, on hut circles this time. The project will run from Saturday, March 19 to Friday, March 26.

Murray Cook of AOC says anybody interested is welcome to volunteer and should contact him murrayc@aocscot.co.uk telephone 0131 440 3593.

Murray also says he would be very willing to give a lecture on Kintore to anyone interested, if facilitates could be organised.

KINTORE ARCHAEOLOGY GROUP FORMED

The informal Kintore Archaeology Group was set up, following continued work on the Kintore Landscape Project last October by Murray Cook, Lindsay Dunbar and Rob Engl from AOL Archaeology assisted by local volunteers. All who attended thoroughly enjoyed the experience and are looking forward to AOL's return and work on the project during 2005.

Work in October 2004 included a cairn excavation; field walking; and test-pitting in fields, using garden sieves. Finds revealed enclosures with evidence of metal working; a Mesolithic flint scatter; polished stone axes; and a pollen core. A significant find was an assemblage of narrow blades.

The first archaeological survey of 2005 will be carried out between 19th to 26th March. We are looking for new volunteers to assist and would be pleased to hear from anyone who’d like to join us. This could be anything from a few hours to the whole week.

Anyone interested in volunteering to help with the archaeological work in 2005 and/or joining the group, which meets locally can contact Kathy Davidson.

Find out more about pre-historic Kintore by getting involved. No previous experience necessary, just an interest in finding out about the archaeology of the area, which highlights Kintore as having been an important settlement for thousands of years.

30 HOMES PLAN FOR GAUCH HILL

The application includes a filling station located behind the store. If approved this would be the first filling station in Kintore since the Ashfield filling station closed. A copy of the plan is available at Aberdeenshire Council's website.
